Abstract

Nowadays, the Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale supported by the Movement Disorder Society (MDS-UPDRS), is a standardized and widely accepted instrument to rate Parkinson disease (PD). Besides the subjective human interpretation, the MDS-UPDRS does not cover all performances during the motor examination. In this work, a fuzzy inference model is proposed to perform an assessment of the pronation-supination hand movements covering biomechanical behaviours that indicate performances not mentioned in the MDS-UPDRS guidelines. Overall, 12 biomechanical features were obtained to quantify motor affectations based on measurements performed by inertial measurement units (IMUs). After a feature selection process, the biomechanical features were used as inputs for the fuzzy inference model
